Foreign nationals who change jobs in China often go through the process of changing their visas. Expatriates may have some difficulties in changing their visa due to some documentation issues. When a foreigner leaves their current job for some reason, they must apply for cancellation of their work permit within 10 working days from the last day of employment. Otherwise, they may have problems applying for a work permit again in China.
Based on the Service Guide for Work Permits for Foreigners in China (Provisional) (Wai Zhuan Fa [2017] No. 36), a work permit can be cancelled under the following circumstances:

If the work permit is not renewed upon expiration, it
will be automatically cancelled.
If a foreigner applies for a work permit in China
again, he or she will always need to provide a work permit cancellation slip
and a certificate of resignation.

If the applicant dies or becomes incapacitated or
terminates or dissolves the labor contract early, the employer shall apply
for cancellation of the work permit within 10 working days from the date of
occurrence.
Expatriates need to have a certificate of cancellation
from the company, a username for the work permit system, and a password.

The employer is cancelled, and the applicant applies
for the cancellation of the work permit.
If the work permit is not cancelled for more than 10
days, the foreigner may be invited to provide entry and exit records and
other certificates.
4.
Where the permit is revoked or withdrawn in accordance
with law, the work permit is to be cancelled.
After applying for work permit cancellation, the applicant will be issued a work permit cancellation form. Currently, the work permit cancellation form is only in Chinese and has no English translation. The work permit cancellation process generally takes 3-5 business days.
